No Armor, Nor Sword

A warrior's creed, attributed to an anonymous samurai, 14th century

I have no Parents; I make the Heavens and the Earth my Parents.

I have no Home; I make my "cauldron of life force" my Home.

I have no Divine Power; I make Honesty my Divine Power.

I have no Means; I make Docility my Means.

I have no Magic Power; I make Personality my Magic Power.

I have neither Life nor Death; I make the tides of breathing my Life and Death.

I have no Body; I make Stoicism my Body.

I have no Eyes; I make The Flash of Lightning my Eyes.

I have no Ears; I make Sensibility my Ears.

I have no Limbs; I make Promptitude my Limbs.

I have no Laws; I make Self-Protection my Laws.

I have no Strategy; I make the Right to Kill and the Right to Restore Life my Strategy.

I have no Designs; I make Seizing the Opportunity by the Forelock my Designs.

I have no Miracles; I make Righteous Laws my Miracle.

I have no Principles; I make Adaptability to all circumstances my Principle.

I have no Tactics; I make Emptiness and Fullness my Tactics.

I have no Talent; I make Ready Wit my Talent.

I have no Friends; I make my Mind my Friend.

I have no Enemy; I make Incautiousness my Enemy.

I have no Armour; I make Benevolence my Armour.

I have no Castle; I make Immovable Mind my Castle.

I have no Sword; I make Absence of Self and No Mind my Sword.

This work is attributed to an anonymous samurai warrior and is said to date from the 14th century. It is striking that a warfighter would speak of benevolence and of laying down the sword for a state of No-Mind — what many would later call Zen.

Reflection I — I Make Heaven and Earth My Parents
Reflection I — Origin Beyond Blood
"I have no Parents; I make the Heavens and the Earth my Parents."

In a single stroke it dissolves the narrow lineage of family, tribe, and personal history, placing the speaker as a child of the universe and cosmos itself.

01

How have the stories of your bloodline — the triumphs and the wounds you inherited — shaped the boundaries of who you believe yourself to be? Where do those stories still bind you?

02

If you truly allowed yourself to feel that you arise not merely from human parents but from the vast, indifferent, luminous field of existence, what softens in your self-judgment? What hardens into clearer responsibility?

03

How might this larger belonging alter the way you meet your body — its strength, its frailty, its training? Does the flesh become less a personal possession to be perfected or punished, and more a temporary vessel through which the universe moves?

04

Have you been guilty of measuring yourself only by the unfinished business of those who came before you? Training ceases to be a private war and becomes a quiet offering — keeping this form clear so that whatever larger life wishes to move through it may do so without obstruction.

Reflection II — Benevolence As Armor
"I have no Armor; I make Benevolence my Armor."
01

What does it mean to walk without the usual shields of status, achievement, or defensive hardness, and to trust instead the quiet strength of goodwill?

02

When have you chosen benevolence not as strategy or performance, but as the only response that felt true — and what did that choice cost you, and what did it return?

03

In the long labor of fitness, health, and vitality, how does benevolence change the quality of intention? Does it turn the pursuit of strength from a conquest into a form of care — for the self that must live in this body, and for the world that body will touch?

04

What would it be like if one day you simply stopped fighting and trained as if your body were a precious friend who had already given everything it could, and the only remaining task was kindness? What would it feel like if your armor was no longer made of willpower alone, but of a quiet, stubborn goodwill toward the being who must carry this life forward?

Reflection III — The Sword Of No-Mind
"I have no Sword; I make Absence of Self and No Mind my Sword."

This is the warrior's "mushin no shin," or "mind without mind" — a consciousness free of grasping, judgment, and the noise of self-reference.

01

Have you ever known a moment when the usual "commentary of the self" fell silent, and action arose clean and complete? Under what circumstances did that silence arrive?

02

How did that "absence of self" alter the quality of what you did — whether in movement, in speech, or in the simple act of being present?

03

How might this same emptiness be invited into the daily work of vitality — into the breath, the repetition, the recovery, the ordinary decisions that either fragment or gather a life?

Something To Contemplate

When fatigue burns away every story you have told yourself about who you are and what you can still do, there is only the next step, the next breath, the task and the body moving as one continuous thing. No effort, no watcher, no victory or defeat. Afterward the mind returns with its usual noise, yet something had been permanently loosened.

On occasion when training, seek that same emptiness — not as a technique to master, but as a place to rest. In that resting the body finds its own intelligence, and vitality stops being something you manufacture and becomes something you stop obstructing. It flows. It circulates, and all directions and all vectors are equal in its force.

These three doors — cosmic parentage, benevolence as armor, and the sword of no-mind — open onto the same quiet center: a life no longer defended by the small self, yet more fully lived with performance and vitality enhanced because of your ability to surrender and acquiesce.
